My new novel, Dare To Know, is coming out this fall!
I’ve been sitting on this news for a while, but here it is: at long last, I have a new book coming out!
Yes, over a decade after my YA novel The Order of Odd-Fish got published, I’m making my adult debut with a speculative thriller. It comes out on September 14, 2021.
It’s called Dare To Know, and it’s being published by Quirk Books, whom you know from fantastic novels like Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Last Policeman, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and many more.
Landing at Quirk is kind of a dream for me. I’ve had my eye on them for a long time. Thanks so much to my fantastic agent John Cusick and my ace editor Jhanteigh Kupihea for taking me on!
It’s early in the process, so we haven’t decided on a cover yet, but you can already pre-order Dare To Know. You can pre-order it here through Bookshop.org to support local booksellers, but of course you can also do it through Amazon here.
What’s it about? Glad you asked:
Annihilation meets The Last Policeman in this ambitious and immersive speculative thriller set in a world in which you can learn the exact moment of your death—for a price . . .
Our narrator is the most talented employee at Dare to Know, a prestigious company in the death-prediction business. But while he has mastered the art of death, the rest of his life is an abject failure. On the day we meet him, he is shaken by a near accident and decides to violate the cardinal rule of his business by forecasting his own death day. The problem: apparently he died twenty-three minutes ago.
His death prediction model is never wrong, which means the narrator’s life is a violation of nature—and could have widespread consequences. The only person who can truly confirm his prediction is Julia, the woman he loved and lost during his rise up the ranks of Dare to Know. She’s the only person who has predicted his death before, which remains sealed in a blue envelope in her possession. As he travels across the country to see her, our narrator is forced to confront his past, the choices he’s made, and the terrifying truth about his fate.
