Secrets of Story Episode 35: How Can Co-Writing Help You?

January 3, 2022

On Episode 35 of our “Secrets of Story” podcast, Matt Bird and I host TWO guest authors! Keir Graff and Linda Joffe Hull have co-written several books together under their combined pen name “Linda Keir,” including their steamy thriller about swingers, The Swing of Things. How can writing with a partner unlock your creativity? What are the advantages and disadvantages and best practices? And is Matt correct when he says certain kinds of “transgression” be “punished” in stories? (He is not.)

Keir has been my friend for years, and is my partner in crime for the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival, which he co-hosts with me in Chicago and sometimes around the country. We also write the opening skit together. Which reminds me, you still have time to submit movies for the 90-Second Newbery! The general deadline for movies has been extended to February 25, 2022, and the deadline for movies for the New York screening is February 1, 2022. More information at the 90-Second Newbery website, including pointers on how to make your own movie even if you’re a total amateur. Don’t be afraid! Make this the year!

One other announcement. On January 11, 2022 I’m doing a virtual event for the King’s English Bookstore in Salt Lake City, talking about my new novel Dare to Know. (By the way, did I mention Dare to Know was, ahem, a Best Book of 2021 for The Times?) I’m honored to be interviewed by author Jac Jemc, whose books I have admired for years. (All her stuff is brilliant, but especially check out her harrowing house-horror story The Grip of It and her whip-smart short story collection False Bingo. Tell ’em Kennedy sent you!)

Details about our King’s English Bookstore January 11 virtual event, including info on registration, here.
