Behold! The Legend of Frogboy is coming

October 16, 2026

I can at last reveal the cover for my upcoming middle-grade adventure novel Behold! The Legend of Frogboy. Ain’t it a beaut? The super-talented artist Parker Nielsen drew not only the cover, but also dozens of amazing illustrations within. If you love the cover (and I do), you’ll love this book!

It comes out on May 4, 2027, but please pre-order now! Pre-orders really matter for a book’s success. It’s my triumphant return to children’s literature, but it will only really be triumphant if folks buy it. So I beg you, America: order now!

I did an interview about Frogboy. Want to learn more about this book’s origins in a derailed college musical I wrote with my friend? And why I took such a long break from kidlit? And my thoughts about why Roald Dahl’s books still sell? And why I like weird songs in children’s books? It’s all in my interview with superlibrarian Betsy Bird for her Fuse #8 blog at the School Library Journal.

Oh, and here’s what Frogboy is about, per the jacket copy:

A swampy rescue mission that is as epic as it is gooey

Orphan Hank Hollering may have been raised in a bayou motel by the vile Boazer sisters, but he’s got a secret—Hank can transform into a frog. So far, all it’s gotten him is featured as a roadside attraction meant to bring business to the motel.

But all of that is about to change.

The swamp is weirder and wilder than Hank knows, and a frogboy is far from the strangest thing in it. When his only friend, a baby kraken named Zuleika, is flushed into terrible danger, Hank is the only one who can rescue her. Soon he is plunged into a magical world full of talking animals, secret cities, and enchanted houseboats, where everyone is a rhyme away from bursting into song, and a freaky giant eagerly hunts a kraken dinner. To save Zuleika, Hank is going to have to become more than a frogboy—he’s going to have to become a hero.

Cinematic, stylish, deliriously funny and bursting with illustrations, Behold! The Legend of Frogboy is a swampy romp is perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and Spongebob Squarepants.

Pretty snappy, huh? Makes you want to pre-order, I’ll bet!

Need more convincing? Don’t take my word for it, some of the biggest heavy hitters in kidlit have come out swinging with advance praise for Frogboy. I’m so thankful to all of them. Check out these blurbs:

“If you can’t handle funny funky phantasmagorical storytelling, do not read this book. The combination of words and perfectly preposterous art will blow your mind. Consider yourself warned. Or maybe now enchanted.”
—JON SCIESZKA, National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Emeritus

“This is one wild, crazy, unforgettable, laugh-yourself-sick, wonderfully weird book. I loved it. And you will, too.”
—KATHERINE APPLEGATE, author of Newbery Medal Winner The One and Only Ivan

“Frogboy is everything its swashbuckling cover promises. Kennedy delivers both mythic and downhome storytelling, helmed by a cheer-worthy hero, up against a whole heap of hoo-doo, scallywagging scoundrels, and a swamp-load of peril. As outrageous as our hero is courageous. A non-stop rollicking ride through and through.”
—RITA WILLIAMS-GARCIA, author of Newbery Honor Book One Crazy Summer

“A swamp fever-dream of a tale including everything you need to know about gator choirs, monster judges, lost cities, flying jails, houseboat repair, and the melancholy life cycle of the eel. As a crawfish bellows early, ‘It’s the season of strange and we’re lucky enough to be there at the very beginning, in the front row seats, for the best and wildest part!'”
—M.T. ANDERSON, author of Newbery Honor Book Elf Dog & Owl Head

“Behold the most bizarre and lovable cast of characters you’ve met in ages. The Legend of Frogboy is charming, disgusting, heartbreaking, and snort-out-loud funny, and will have kids screaming for one more chapter.”
—JACQUELINE WEST, author the NYT bestselling Books of Elsewhere

“Behold! James Kennedy returns to middle grade with a delicious gumbo overflowing with all the ingredients that makes a story great—songs! Swamp monsters! Zepplins! Zealots! and, of course … toenails! There has never been an adventure quite like Frogboy!”
—JONATHAN AUXIER, NYT Times Bestselling author of Sweep, The Night Gardener, and the Vanished Kingdom series.

May 4, 2027 is the day. In the meantime, pre-order yourself a copy of Behold! The Legend of Frogboy. Pre-order five! THANK YOU.
